Excel Challenges Solutions

In this post you will find  the solutions to the restaurant bookings Excel challenges. In the spreadsheet below for download you will see all the funcions and formulas used to solved the problems.

Part 1. Restaurant bookings

  1. Select all the names in sheet “header”, from cell A1 to A12, copy them (press CTRL + C) and go to the bookings sheet. First, add a new row above the table and finally  click “Paste Transpose”.
  2. Select the entire columns from A to K and double click black double-headed arrow.
  3. The goal of this exercise is to get rid of duplicates. Go to “Data” in the ribbon and click the “Remove duplicates” button.
  4. At the bottom of the spreadsheet, press the “+” button and create a new sheet. Return to the “bookings” sheet and select and copy all the table. In the new sheet, select cell A1 and paste the table. Finally to rename the sheet, right click on mouse and click “Rename”. Write in the sheet tab “backup”.
  5. Select the entire column M, right click on the mouse and select “Hide”.
  6. Select all the header, and in “Home”, click the fill the colour button and choose blue. To add borders, select all the table (use shortcuts), click the dropdown menu of borders and click “All borders”.
  7. The goal of this exercise is to learn how to sort a table in Excel. Select any cell of the bookings table, go to “Data” in the ribbon, click “Sort”. In the pop-up window first input “meal_date” and then click “Add level” and enter “book_hour”.
  8. Although you can do it in one formula, it’s recommended to break down this exercise in three steps:
    1. In a new column, extract the domain. Use the text function RIGHT().
    2. In other column (“new-domain”) enter a nested conditional to replace the  provider based on the  instructions of the exercise.
    3. Finally, replace the old domain with the new one. Now you have the correct email of the client.
  9. This exercise wants you to get familiar with date functions. In this case, enter the MONTH() function with reference to the meal date.
  10. Excel idenifies both columns as dates, so you just have to subtract the booking date from the meal date to have the number of days in-between (“count_days”).
  11. This’s a common use case of VLOOKUP(). You’re asked to find a value (the phone number)  in other table and show it in a new column of your dataset. See function in the solutions file.
